Course Description | This broad introduction to the nature, vocabulary, media, and history of art, with selections from western and non-western cultures, is designed to expand visual awareness and understanding of the visual arts as a unique medium for human inter-relationships. Ninth ed., Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2009. | Grading Students will be graded on quizzes, writing assignments, and a comprehensive final exam. Quizzes - 50% Writing assignments 25% Final Exam - 25% A 90 - 100 % B 80 - 90 % C 70 - 80 % D 60 - 70 % F Less than 60 % | Course Objectives The objective for this course is to accomplish the following: 1. You will become aware of the history of art from the earliest know examples to the most recent works. 2. You will develop your critical thinking skills in regards to the critical analysis of art. 3. You will develop the means to create written analysis and critique and other written documents as a way of understanding and interpreting art. 4. You will develop your ability to express yourself in the realm of online discourse. | Course Policies Your goal as student and mine as teacher is your success in this class. To that end, I recommend the following practices to achieve that goal: 1. Be active in the class. Complete all assignments on time. 2. Be scholarly. Spelling, grammar, clear writing, and citing of sources are essential to scholarly discourse. 3. Participate fully. Spend time reading, thinking, and writing about the topics of this class. | Readings and Online Assignments | This class is divided into eight modules. In each of these modules, you will be directed to read selected chapters of text and become familiar with the content of the assigned chapters. You will also have writing assignments, quizzes, and exams. This coursework is due no later than the posted date. | Late and Missed Assignments and Quizzes Late and missed assignments and quizzes will lower your final grade. Quizzes and assignments will be marked Late when they are submitted after the Due Date. You will lose grade points for lateness. There are no extensions to due dates. Turn your work in well before the due date to ensure that you are given full credit. | Plagiarism | Plagiarism can cause you to fail the assignment, the exam, or the course. The Standards of Student Conduct of West Los Angeles College establish the terms of academic honesty. | Class Schedule and Required Reading | This is an online course with no on-campus meetings. All writing and testing will be done online. No assignments will be accepted after the end of the class. You will have a section of required reading.
